Tough Love

Things have not been to easy around here for Shawn or I... I have come to realize it is time for us to stop babying Shawn if we really want him to succeed in life. We know he can talk.. But we keep enabling him.. It's so hard... I kept thinking that as Shawn got older things would get easier with him, that has not been the case. He truly has formed a very independent and stubborn little personality. It's like a double edge sword: we are so glad he is building a mind of his own and happy that he is so full of himself ,But we are also frustrated like any other parent that he is building a mind of his own and is so full of himself...

We are working with a great team of women to try to stay on top of Shawn and all the growing up he is going to be doing... I could never do this alone. Whats so funny is we have everyone on the same page but daddy... he just loves to baby is little boy.. it makes some things really hard. But I have to pick my battles, he is such a good daddy. His teacher from school has been great!! She really pushes the children and expects the most out of them. I am so thankful for that. So many of the schools just want to push our children along. Mrs. Dodaro's is so different.. Amazing how Shawn will talk in her class because she makes him.. hummmmm.. His tutor is so knowledgeable and doesn't put up with anything. She really has the ability to work through Shawn's strong will. Though there are days where I am sure she wants to quit.. she never gives up on him. , I don't know what I would do without her. His Speech therapist is so hands as well I am so thankful she cares so much about Shawn. I know that things could be a lot worse and I am so grateful for how great things are..

I always say one of the reasons that it is so hard for me sometimes to except Shawn having D.S. is the fact that so many of the things that he does is so much of a typical child. It isn't until he tries to talk that I realize that he really has D.S.

So Tough love it is for us right now.. It is not something I really want to do, but I have to do so Shawn can grow up to be a fine young man... (I hope)..

Shawn and Daddy's Car

Shawn has had a very busy and interesting spring break.. this week daddy had decided to leave his good car home in the garage and drive the truck to work.. Well I guess Shawn thought it was a good time to take over his car. All I can say is I am glad Shawn is Shawn because if it was anyone else we would be dead!!!!

First Shawn decided to use daddy's car to bounce his soccer ball off of.. he left skid marks all the way down the roof of the car. Ones that would not just rub out. He also decided to get in the car and rearrange all the mirrors, the visors, and anything else he could in the car for his daddy. Well daddy had an appt. this morning to get the car detailed to get the skid marks rubbed out. You would think that would be enough damage for one day!!! But nope... the car was dead.. yeap little sinker left the door open a crack so the lights stayed on. killed the battery.. So Robert had to get a new battery before he could do anything else. I just stayed in the house and tried not to pay attention to everything going on.. didn't want to feed the fire anymore.. Needless to say it was an interesting morning.. Funniest part??? Shawn had no clue what he really did wrong.. and Robert really couldn't be mad at him. Thank goodness.. Everyday is an adventure....

Gymnastics show

Shawn has been doing Gymnastics now for 1 1/2 years. He actually is really getting pretty good at it. When he first started at the gym that he goes to he was in the special needs class. He did very good in the class. Summer came we were very lucky and fortunate that the gym offered to let Shawn do their Summer program. I had a couple other programs that I had wanted Shawn to possibly do but the people were not very inviting for Shawn... Needless to say I was very excited that Bayside Gym was willing to give my precious angel a chance. He loved it, they loved him.. It was so good for him. When the school year started Shawn was able to move up from the special needs class to a regular class with boys. Grant it he needs alittle attention but they have been so wonderful with him.

Shawn will be in his first program in May. I was very nervous about doing it but the gym really wants him to take part. They are so wonderful with him. It is nice to see that they are willing to help him so he can be a part of something that everyone else is doing. I wasn't going to do it because I didn't want to be a burden. I am so thankful and grateful for everything they do for my baby, they don't see it that way. So anyway he will get his first trophy and do his first routine. They are going to modify a routine just for him. Okay.. so now I am alittle excited for him.. I will be posting pictures as he starts to get ready..
